Can rainfall seasonality trigger soil water repellency in a tropical riparian forest?

چکیده
Abstract Though riparian areas generally have a shallow water table and higher soil moisture compared to upslope areas, climatic seasonality may trigger repellency in tropical forests, which, if persistent, could negatively affect essential ecosystem functions related resources protection such as reduced overland-flow, sediment transport, nutrient filtration. The objective of this study was answer the following: can forests develop repellency? If so, does infiltration on seasonal basis? For this, were measured grid 72 points during dry wet month forest with region highly marked seasonality. Water significantly different between months. affected month, its effect insignificant. As result, capacity observed over period. Previous research has claimed that development persistence soils promote other hydrological processes overland flow. findings shown here demonstrate phenomenon not persist longer than season.

Rainfall exclusion in an eastern Amazonian forest alters soil water movement and depth of water uptake.
Deuterium-labeled water was used to study the effect of the Tapajós Throughfall Exclusion Experiment (TTEE) on soil moisture movement and on depth of water uptake by trees of Coussarea racemosa, Sclerolobium chrysophyllum, and Eschweilera pedicellata. The TTEE simulates an extended dry season in an eastern Amazonian rainforest, a plausible scenario if the El Niño phenomenon changes with climate...

[1] An important factor controlling catchment-scale water balance is the seasonal variation of climate. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the seasonal distributions of water and energy, and their interactions with the soil moisture store, on mean annual water balance in Australia at catchment scales using a stochastic model of soil moisture balance with seasonally varying fo...
متن کاملRiparian corridors enhance movement of a forest specialist bird in fragmented tropical forest.
Riparian corridors and fencerows are hypothesized to increase the persistence of forest animals in fragmented landscapes by facilitating movement among suitable habitat patches. This function may be critically important for forest birds, which have declined dramatically in fragmented habitats. Unfortunately, direct evidence of corridor use has been difficult to collect at landscape scales and t...

Landscape corridors connecting habitat patches may help overcome the genetic and demographic problems of small and isolated populations. An elegant field experiment shows that some Costa Rican forest birds will use 'riparian' (river margin) corridors to get back home, but they can be picky about corridor quality.
